Tornado To Land In Holly;

After a decade at historic Barrie Arena, Jr. 'B' team, minor program moving to brand new facility

Posted By Dave Dawson
Barrie Examiner

The renaissance of lacrosse in Barrie over the past 10 years has been remarkable. And organizers are hoping a change of venue won't slow down the giant strides the sport has made in the city.

For the past decade, minor lacrosse has been played at Barrie Arena on Dunlop Street. But the city has decided to shudder the ancient facility and that means the entire minor lacrosse program is moving to the city's new Holly Community Centre.

"All of our minor lacrosse programs and the Jr. 'B' team program will be moving to Holly," Barrie South Simcoe Minor Lacrosse Association executive Mike Kloepfer confirmed. "It's exciting to be moving to new facilities. For lacrosse, we get to move into a modern building with great sightlines, comfortable seats, spacious dressing rooms, a brand new floor...it's great," he said. "Having the twin pads will also allow us to run our annual novice/peewee tournament all in one place, hopefully, so this certainly opens up opportunity," Kloepfer added.

But Barrie Arena will be missed, he said. "I will never forget the 2003 championship when there were 400 to 500 people lined up outside and there was 2,000 people inside; it was electric," recalled Kloepfer. "I think a lot of people in this city will shed a tear when that arena is closed."

And that's why he and Robin Groves, the current manager of the Barrie Molson Centre who formerly worked at Barrie Arena, will be at the Dunlop Street institution with their video cameras and still cameras this week, capturing memories of the old barn.
"It was a great place and it holds a lot of memories for a lot of people, but we've resigned ourselves to move on," Kloepfer said. And he thinks today's lacrosse players will welcome the change. He said registration is expected to climb 12 per cent for minor lacrosse this summer, bringing the organization back up to its peak of between 550 to 600 athletes.
"When Innisfil Minor Lacrosse began their program, that impacted our numbers, but we are expecting growth again this year, and it's great to see the growth of the sport since we started from nothing 10 years ago," Kloepfer said.

In addition to the popular minor lacrosse program - open to kids aged 3 to 21 - there is also a Jr. 'B' Tornado squad, field lacrosse and masters lacrosse offered in Barrie.

TORNADO MINOR GRADUATE & JR-U19 PLAYER TO PLAY

FOR SCOTLAND

  Barnard Ready For Challenge

BARRIE- Mitchell Barnard did not envision representing Scotland when he began playing lacrosse in Barrie South Simcoe Minor Lacrosse Association at 9 years old. Last year saw the 17 year old graduate from minor lacrosse to play for the Barrie Tornado Jr. B's in box lacrosse in summer followed by a successful field lacrosse season this past fall where the Barrie Tornado U19 Field team won the Ontario DII U19 Field Lacrosse Championship.

The opportunity arose for the Grade 12 student at Eastview Secondary School to travel to Edinburgh, Scotland last month for their country's U19 Try Outs. He was successful in his bid and has been named to Scotland's U19 team which will compete at the World U19 Field Lacrosse Championships this July in Port Coquitlam BC.

Barrie Tornado Minor, Jr. And U19 Lacrosse are proud of his accomplishments.

The Zone 4 Coach of the Year was awarded to Dave Ree this year at the OLA AGM on November 3rd at the Sheraton Falls Convention Centre in Niagara Falls.

Dave has been with Barrie South Simcoe Minor Lacrosse Association since 2001.  He has coached a rep team every year since then.  The thing that has distinguished him throughout these years has been his commitment to support the associations coaching needs.  He has done this by answering the call to coach teams where he was most needed.  This sacrifice has seen him year after year coach teams in need that have never included teams his sons were playing on.

Four years ago, Dave took over our Intermediate program.  As everyone knows this is one of the most difficult age categories to coach.  He has done this with a tremendous commitment leading our Barrie Tornado Intermediate team to the 2006 Ontario Intermediate "B" and the 2007 Ontario Intermediate "A" Championships.  His teams have been committed and disciplined.  He has been concerned with development and helping his players become better players and people.

Dave's other positions with our club are:  He is an executive member and is our Referee In Chief and regularly officiates games.  He is an assistant coach on our Barrie Tornado U19 Field Lacrosse team.  Dave serves as a convener with our house league program and Tornado Classic Tourney as well.

We hope that everyone can appreciate the extraordinary efforts made by Dave this year and congratulate him as the "Coach of the Year" from our Zone.

TORNADO INTERMEDIATE WINS PROVINCIAL B CHAMPIONSHIP

August 20, 2006 - Press Release

The intermediates, sponsored by Innovative Automation, started Friday morning against the Elora Mohawks who quickly reminded Barrie what provincials were all about, don’t take a shift off.  Barrie lost their first and only game 7 – 6 in overtime.

The second game against Cambridge didn’t get much easier.  Without a strong five point performance from veteran Chris Houle, Barrie might have gone home early, but instead hung on to win 7 – 6.  From here on in, the boys took control and never looked back as they followed the perseverance and discipline of their captain Mike Lacey.

Brockville was the next victim to be sent packing with a commanding 10 – 3 defeat.  Niagara-on-the-Lake and Hamilton both fell in order even though the scores were closer.  The top goaltending skills of Wade Stever and Andrew Ball combined with a solid defence consisting of Brandon Tress, Josh Higgins, Klye Bailey, James Reid, John Rae, Cory Kloepfer, McKenzie Willson, and Mark Lancia left no doubt who was in control.

Along came Elora again who were blind sided by the Tornado this tine around as the specialty teams took advantage of the Mohawks undisciplined and unrespectful attitude towards Barrie as they filled the penalty box on several occasions.  Tornado wins 12 – 2 sending them to the championship game.

By the time the seventh game of the weekend had arrived, adrenalin had taken over and there were no signs of fatigue.  Everyone was focused on the task at hand.  The offence had several shots, but the Windsor goalie kept Barrie off the board until 5:38 of the first period when Cory Heaslegrave found the mesh with a quick release after receiving a pass from Justin Dow.  The score remained tied 1 – 1, late in the second period Chris Houle stepped just past the defence and beat the goalie to take a 2 – 1 lead.

The Barrie Tornado grew stronger as the game went on, as they scored twice more with goals from Greg Reid and Justin Kloepfer, helpers went to Josh Higgins and Cory Heaslegrave while Dow added his second and third assist of the game.  Tornado defeated Windsor 4 – 1 to win GOLD and Provincial “ B “ Honours.

Midget Tornado a strong force
First Barrie team to qualify for provincial A championships

By
TOM MICHIBATA
The Barrie Examiner - Sports - Friday, August 11, 2006 @ 07:00

After a few years of getting their derrieres spanked, it seems fitting that only now the Barrie Tornado midget lacrosse team is dishing out some punishment of its own.

The result has been a landmark accomplishment for the local outfit. It has qualified for the Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) provincial A championships (players born in 1990 or 1991) going on in Ottawa this weekend.

It’s the first time a Barrie squad has made the grade at the A level at this Ontario competition.

The Tornado are amongst eight squads vying for the top four spots after round-robin competition and a shot at a medal.

Sporting an overall record of 16-13-2 from exhibition and tournament play, the Tornado are peaking at the right time. Needing a victory in its final tilt at the 14-team provincial qualifying tournament last month, Barrie came through in flying colours, defeating Six Nations 6-5 and thus securing the seventh of eight spots for the main event.

With the Tornado holding a 5-4 lead, Six Nations managed to tie the affair with about three minutes remaining in the contest. But Shane Cater potted the game-winner in the final minute to give Barrie its berth.

“It was a game we had to win and we got it,” said Tornado captain Brandon MacDonald, 16, who helps anchor the teams defence.  “We came up huge.“

“It was the teams best game of the year,” said Tornado coach Luke Ringler.

“They had their backs to the wall and the kids responded.“

The Tornado finished with a 6-6-1 mark at the provincial qualifier held over two weekends in London and Whitby. They went 2-4 on the first weekend and an impressive 4-2-1 on the second.

After being together for so long (since 2001), the players have bought into a system where no one individual is a star. The tenets are quick ball movement, executing the fundamentals and grinding down the opponent.

“The key this year has been playing within ourselves,” Ringler explained.

“We play a certain system. We get one or two goals ahead and then grind it out were not gong to blow anybody out. We have some speed, but we play more of a controlled game. We have a solid defence and our offence put the ball into the net when it has to. “

“Actually, Andrew Ball (the clubs No. 1 goalie) has been our most consistent player all year.”

“It feels really good to see things come together like they have this year,” said the five-foot-seven MacDonald, who’s going into Grade 11 at Eastview Secondary School this fall. “We’re communicating on the floor a lot better than we have in past years. We know what people are doing and everybody is older now.”

Ringler said the team took its lumps in the formulative years, knowing the worm would turn at some point.

“It’s very nice to be here (for provincials), “he said. “Our expectations were to be here in Ottawa this year. This group of kids has been together since 2001 this was our year to get to Ottawa.”

“This is the final year the core of the team will be playing together. Next year, some will go on to play for the Junior B Tornado and others might play intermediate.”

“I’ve been coaching this team for six years, and we’ve been getting better and better to the point that we’ve caught up to the other teams,” Ringler continued. “At the start, these teams were beating us by five to 10 goals.“

Now we can beat anybody,” said Ringer. “Physically and mentally the players have matured.”

“We started in C and now were in A”, MacDonald added. “I've been on different teams in hockey, but I would say the guys on this team get along better than any of those teams.”

In three tournaments this season, the Tornados notched a bronze medal in Orangeville, reached the semi-finals in Peterborough and didn’t qualify for the elimination rounds in Guelph.

On the backline, Jacob Bauchman, Jeff Sinkic, Mitchell Islam, Cory Kloepfer and Mitchell Barnard, along with MacDonald, have been towers of power. Jack Meher, Michael Barrett, Ryan Cook and Garrett Smith supply the depth.

Upfront, Harley Ferrell and Shane Cater have been the go-to guys offensively. Dustin Leigh, Sean Leaver and Zach Tomkinson are right behind.

Shane Burggraf, Jack Fleming and Michael Mawdsley form a good supporting cast.

“We have great goaltending. Our defence has been solid all year and, in the last weekend of qualifying, our offence came around,” Ringler said.

Barrie has a 2-1 record after playing its first three games yesterday.

The Tornadoes opened with a 7-4 victory over Oakville, lost to Windsor 4-3 and then beat Orangeville 5-3.

Ferrell and Cater led the way against Oakville with two goals each. Singles went to Leigh, Leaver and Tomkinson.

Cater had all three goals against Windsor. Against Orangeville, Leigh led the way with a pair of goals, while singles went to Cater, Ferrell and Leaver.

“We have some good team teams ahead of us but if we play like we can, we can finish in the top four and get a medal here,” MacDonald said. “We have to play as a team. In the qualifying tournament, we were talking to each other on the floor.”
