Lakeshores season ends
Major Series Lacrosse team comes up short in bid for playoff spot.
By IAN SHANTZ- Barrie Examiner
July 21, 2008

The Barrie Lakeshores find themselves in unchartered territory. They're not in the playoff picture for the first time since joining the Major Series Lacrosse loop four seasons ago.
That's the reality following a 6-4 loss to the defending Mann Cup champion Peterborough Lakers Saturday night at the Holly Community Centre that effectively killed the never-say-die Lakeshores' slim playoff hopes.
Barrie, in need of a win Saturday, combined with a loss by Six Nations yesterday in order to sneak into the post-season, eliminated the guess work with the home defeat.
Six Nations dropped a 6-5 decision to the St. Regis Indians yesterday to finish the season with 11 points, the same as Barrie. However, Six Nations gets the playoff nod by virtue of its 2-1 head-to-head record against Barrie this season.
Despite being in the unenviable position, the effort was there Saturday night, just as it was all season, and that's all the Lakeshores could ask for in what was a genuine rebuilding year, general manager and head coach, Lindsay Sanderson, said.
"We knew from the start that we were going to go young again and build from within," the coach said. "We added five or six guys who came right out of Jr. 'A' and 'B'.
"With the young guys, you get inconsistency," he added. "But overall, I saw some improvements in a lot of young guys. We knew we were in tough. We battled."
The Lakeshores entered the 2007-08 campaign without the services of captain Glenn Clark, defensive specialist Brad McArthur and veteran Doug Noganosh, who were lost to retirement. Offensive go-to guys Luke Wiles and Mark Steenhuis weren't on the roster, either. Injuries kept Sean Greenhalgh and Chad Thompson sidelined for the season, and goaltender Pat Campbell was also unavailable.
So, a team that predominantly featured unproven youngsters -- there were 12 first-year players -- began as a young, inexperienced squad, took its lumps along the way, and showed gradual improvement.
The Lakeshores made things interesting with back-to-back wins a week ago to enter the final weekend of the regular season fighting for the playoff spot in the seven-team league.
"We're not happy, obviously, but we shouldn't hang our heads," Lakeshores captain Chad Culp said following Saturday's season-ending loss. "I think we competed hard. That's all we can ask for."
Culp, who led his team in scoring, said there are positives to come out of what was a 5-12-1 finish for the squad.
"We didn't have the talent we had the last couple years, but everybody we played, we played hard against," the captain said. "As long as we're doing that, I'm satisfied.
"A lot of guys played in (new) situations," Culp added. "So, we're only going to get better from that, and hopefully next year, it's not new to them."
Mark Scherman, an offensive threat throughout the season for Barrie, agrees the Lakeshores put up a good fight, despite the odds being stacked against the team from the beginning.
"We knew with some of the teams we were matching up against we didn't always have the best chance, but we gave everything we had, and played hard," Scherman said. "We've got a lot of young guys who came out and worked hard, and I think we'll be one step better next year."
The Lakeshores dropped a 15-7 decision to the first-place Brampton Excelsiors last Thursday, setting up Saturday's must-win contest against second-place Peterborough.
Despite outshooting the Lakers, 47-46, the home team hit a wall in Peterborough goalie Pat O'Toole, a seasoned veteran who also plays for the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League.
"We pissed things away Thursday night (against Brampton), which I was disappointed in," Sanderson said. "But I didn't want us to finish the season on a note where we weren't working hard, and I thought we battled real well (Saturday). I thought Pat O'Toole was the difference."
Nate Sanderson led the Lakeshores with two goals, while Matt Lyons and Scherman had single tallies. Culp added three helpers, and Anthony Lackey, goalie Mike Atwood, Brad Trottier, Jeff Gilbert and Nick Trudeau also supplied assists.
Pacing the Lakers' attack was Tracey Kelusky, with a goal and three assists, Lindsay Plunkett with two goals and one assist, O'Toole, with a pair of assists, Scott Evans with one goal and one assist, captain Matt Giles with one goal, and Mike Hobbins with one goal.

Lakeshores Hit Bump in Brampton
MSL
July 18, 2008
Barrie Examiner

(STAFF) -- The Barrie Lakeshores were looking to boost their drive towards the playoffs last night, but, instead, hit a speed bump in Brampton, as the top-ranked Excelsiors toppled Barrie, 15-7.
The Lakeshores are even with Six Nations in the battle for the final Major Series Lacrosse playoff position. Six Nations was in Kitchener-Waterloo to face the Kodiaks.
The contest ended in a tie.
Nick Trudeau led the way for Barrie with three goals and an assist, while Nate Sanderson scored twice and added a pair of helpers. Patrick Janson and Aimee Caines each had one goal and one assist, while Chad Culp supplied four helpers.
Jeff Chattler was a one-man wrecking crew for Brampton, scoring six goals. Rob Blasdell was tagged with the loss in goal for Barrie.
The Lakeshores host the Peterborough Lakers tomorrow night at the Holly Community Centre in a 7 p. m. start, while Six Nations closes out its season in St. Regis against the Indians Sunday afternoon.

Win Out and Lakeshores Are In
Barrie can wrap up playoff berth with wins in final two games
By IAN SHANTZ- Barrie Examiner
July 16, 2008

It's simple math for the Barrie Lakeshores heading into the final weekend of the Major Series Lacrosse season.
The Lakeshores have two games remaining. So does Six Nations.
Heading into Brampton tonight to face the top-ranked Excelsiors, Barrie (5-10-1) clings to a one-point lead over Six Nations (5-11-0).
Both teams are jockeying for the sixth and final playoff spot.
"Everyone's well aware of the situation we're in," Lakeshores general manager and head coach Lindsay Sanderson said yesterday. "I'd like to win out."
That sure would simplify the equation for Barrie.
Six Nations had a game in hand on
Barrie entering the week, but squandered the opportunity, dropping a 13-5 decision to Peterborough at home. Lastplace Six Nations goes toe-to-toe with the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks tonight on the road. After that, the team plays its final regular-season game Sunday against the St. Regis Indians.
What it means is this: the Lakeshores -- who close out the season at home to Peterborough Saturday night -- and Six Nations each hold their own keys to the playoff door.
Wins will most certainly unlock that door, while losses will spell the end.
"We're not worrying about (Six Nations), we're worrying about ourselves," Sanderson said. "We've put ourselves in a position to make the playoffs."
Making the playoffs was Barrie's goal
entering the season as a relatively young, inexperienced group. It took a pair of gutsy victories last weekend to turn the post-season into a viable opportunity
The Lakeshores scored 9-6 and 11-9 wins against Brooklin and K-W, respectively, to vault ahead of Six Nations with a week to play.
Sanderson will look for more complete- game efforts this weekend, as that's the only way he envisions his team being successful against the league's first-and second-place teams, Brampton and Peterborough.
"We're a team that, we have to have everybody playing," the coach said. "We're young, and when (the players) see the other guys working hard out there, they seem to follow, and that's when we're at our best."
Lakeshores captain Chad Culp knows wrestling for a playoff spot with a weekend to go isn't an ideal situation, but expects his team will lay it all out on the floor, nonetheless, as nobody wants to be left out of post-season.
"Everyone's goal from training camp is to make the playoffs," the team's leading scorer said. "That's why you play the season.
"It's not going to be easy. We're going to have to go out and give 110 per cent," Culp added. "We definitely don't want to be the ones on the outside looking in, that's for sure."
Sanderson said he'll likely go with Rob Blasdell between the pipes tonight and switch to Mike Atwood against Peterborough.
Game time Saturday at the Holly Community Centre is 7 p. m.

They're Teammates For Life
Founders Cup-winning quintet reunite to play for Lakeshores
By IAN SHANTZ- Barrie Examiner
July 15,2008
Meet the Founders Five.

Jeff Gilbert, Brad Trottier, Ryan Gallagher, Troy Heaselgrave and Matt Saban.
The five lacrosse players -- and the rest of the 2003 Barrie Jr. 'B' Tornado squad -- are almost five years removed from a Founders Cup championship experience they haven't forgotten about.
And how could they?
It was August 2003, and the Barrie Jr. 'B' Tornado had just accomplished what the team had set out to do at the beginning of the year: win a national title.
It was the team's one and only desire from the get-go.
"We're going to win the Founders Cup," the team's general manager at the time, Mike Kloepfer, toldThe Barrie Examineron various occasions that season.
Kloepfer was prophetic, as the team barrelled through the regular season, and fought like warriors throughout the playoffs, fending off elimination six times en route to a provincial crown and the Canadian title in Port Coquitlam, B. C., the team's first and only.
The Founders Five remember it well.
"We were out west, and we were a pretty tight group," Trottier recalled. "Not a whole lot of parents were there, but it was just good. It was just the guys we had to worry about."
The Tornado beat Six Nations in the Ontario final, then rolled through the B. C. tournament, ousting the Coquitlam Adanacs, 16-8, in the final to bring home the national championship and memories that remain fresh.
"That was probably the most important lacrosse I've ever played in my life," Heaselgrave said. "It's just good to look back and reminisce about the good times."
Today, the five have plenty of time to chat about their experiences of that memorable August. Whether it's through a twist of lacrosse fate, sheer individual dedication towards the sport, or a combination of the two, five years after the fact, these five young lacrosse players -- all from the Barrie area -- are teammates once more at a higher level, playing Major Series Lacrosse for the Barrie Lakeshores.

Rookies Heaselgrave and Saban joined three of their title-mates at the start of the season.
"We didn't really think that far ahead at that point in time," Saban said. "But it's good to be back with all the guys again."
Trottier agrees it is a special situation to be in.
"It's great, because a lot of championship teams move on and go their separate ways," he said, "but us, we get together for field lacrosse, too. We're a pretty tight-knit group."
While you'd be hard-pressed to find a group of teammates closer than these five longtime friends, the dividends don't end with the benefit of the dressing room camaraderie. The Lakeshores, these five say, are reaping the benefits on the floor more than anywhere else.
"Whenever you have a championship team, it's obviously the perfect mix of guys that come together," three-year veteran Gilbert said. "So, when you can bring any piece of that puzzle to the next level, moving forward, things are looking bright."
Gallagher agrees.
"Anytime you can keep a group of guys together that you went to battle with and won a championship with, you know they're going to have your back," he said. "Every single moment of every game, you know they're dependable."
The fivesome reached the senior level on their own merit, Lakeshores owner and local lacrosse builder Kloepfer said. He can't think of a more positive spin than having locally-bred athletes making their long and winding journey towards professional lacrosse in the same city they grew up playing in.
"When you think about it, 12 years ago, there wasn't lacrosse in Barrie," Kloepfer said.
"To see five of them out here playing at the Sr. 'A' level is terrific. To have them there when we started Jr. 'B' in 2000, and then graduate from that to be playing senior for the Lakeshores, it's a great thing."
The five budding MSL stars are a big piece of the Lakeshores future, Kloepfer added.
"They're all young guys. They're all under 25 years old," he said. "It's a situation where they've got many years ahead of them, and their best years ahead of them."
The Founders Five won't argue with that.
"Once we get older and a little more experienced, and we get into those situations like when we were playing for the Founders, we'll know what to do," Trottier said.
The Lakeshores have two games remaining this season -- tomorrow in Brampton against the Excelsiors, and at home to the Peterborough Lakers Saturday.
Game time at the Holly Community Centre is 7 p. m.

Lakeshores on Brink of Elimination
The Barrie Examiner
Thursday, August 09, 2007 @ 07:00

The Barrie Lakeshores find themselves on the brink of elimination after a 10-8 loss to the Brampton Excelsiors in Major Series Lacrosse action last night in Brampton.

The Excelsiors, who now lead the best-of-seven semifinal 3-0, can wrap up the series tomorrow night in Brampton.

Last night's loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the Lakeshores. For the third time in the series, Barrie held a lead heading into the third period and couldn't hang on.

The Lakeshores led 5-2 heading into the final frame, but the Excelsiors scored on the first shift and would eventually jump out to an 8-6 lead. Barrie battled back to even the game at 8-8, but Jon Harasym scored the game winner - his second marker of the game - with just 1:02 remaining and an empty net goal sealed the deal just seconds later.

Brodie Merrill led the Brampton attack with three goals, while Blaine Manning added a pair. Josh Sanderson, Cam Woods and Jeff Shatler had singles.

Luke Wiles and Nathan Sanderson paced the Barrie attack with a pair of markers each, while Mark Steenhuis had four assists.

Chad Culp, Sean Greenhalgh, Bryan Kazarian and Anthony Lackey scored once each.

Rob Blasdell kicked aside 42 of 51 shots in goal for Barrie, while Anthony Cosmo made 34 saves for Brampton.

Game time Friday night in Brampton is 8 p.m.

Lakeshores Find Themselves Down 2-0
Author: Don MacNeil:
BARRIE ADVANCE
Date: Aug 07, 2007

The Barrie Lakeshores swept their Major Series Lacrosse regular-season series with the Brampton Excelsiors. But, as the saying goes, that and a buck and a half will get you a cup of coffee, as the Lakeshores lost the first two games of their semifinal series with the Brampton Excelsiors over the Simcoe Day long weekend.

After a two-week layoff due to a bye earned by their second-place finish in the regular-season standings, the Lakeshores showed some ‘rink rust’ in a 7-6 Game 1 loss to the Excelsiors Friday night at the Barrie Molson Centre.

Despite outshooting Brampton 55-40 and having a two-goal third period lead, the Lakeshores gave up the winning goal with 32.5 seconds left in the third giving the Excelsiors a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Going 0-7 with the man advantage didn’t help the Lakeshores, either.

Chad Culp led the Lakeshores’ attack with two goals, two assists. Luke Wiles added a goal and a pair of helpers. Sean Greenhalgh, Matt Holman and Bryan Kazarian also scored for Barrie.

The Lakeshores trailed 2-1 after one period and 4-2 after two, but seemed to come to life with four straight goals to start the third. That is when the Excelsiors picked themselves off the BMC turf, dusted themselves off, and scored the next three goals for the come-from-behind win Dan Teat and Jeff Shatler scored a pair each for Brampton, with Mike Kirk, Aaron Wilson and Blaine Manning netting singles.

Game two Sunday night didn’t go much better for Barrie.

Ahead by two goals midway through the second, the Excelsiors scored four straight to win 7-5 and go up 2-0 in the best-of-seven series.

Lakeshores Head Coach Lindsay Sanderson didn’t hide his disappointment after Sunday’s game. “We wanted to finish up in the top two so we could get that home floor advantage and we’ve pissed that away,” he said, adding “Both game were both winnable by us, we had leads in both games which we gave up.”

Mark Steenhuis led the way for Barrie with a hat trick and an assist. Luke Wiles and Nathan Sanderson also scored for the Lakeshores who got off to fast start but fizzled.

“We scored four goals in the first period and we get one in the last 40 minutes,” said a dissatisfied but not disheartened Sanderson. “You’re not going to win anything with that output.”

Teat scored a pair for Brampton, with Shatler, Josh Sanderson, Pat McCready, Mike Hominuck and Brodie Merrill adding singles.

The power play once again was a weak spot for the Lakeshores who went 1-7 in Game two with the man advantage and are now 1-14 on the power play for the series. They actually ran a goal deficit in game two being outscored 2-1 by Brampton with the Excelsiors occupying the penalty box.

Sanderson shook his head in his post-game interview when describing his team’s power-play performance saying simply, “we lost our man on a couple and it ended up in our net.”

The coach, looking for a silver lining to a dark playoff cloud summed up the weekend saying “we’ve lost both games but we have been right in them, right to the last second. We’ll build on that.”

Game three and four goes Wednesday and Friday nights in Brampton at the Powerade Centre. Game 5 if neccessary will be back in Barrie at the Molson Center Sunday night at 7 PM.

Lakeshores in need of a change; Barrie facing a must-win tomorrow in Brampton

Barrie Lakeshores captain Glenn Clark gets pulled away from the play during action Sunday night at the Barrie Molson Centre against the Brampton Excelsiors. Barrie lost another close game, 7-5, falling two games behind the Excelsiors in the best-of-seven series.

Getting away from home might be just what the doctor ordered for the Barrie Lakeshores. After dropping the first two games of their best-of-seven Major Series lacrosse semifinal playoff series with the Brampton Exclesiors at the Barrie Molson Centre - including a 7-5 loss Sunday night - the series switches to the Powerade Centre in Brampton for Game 3 tomorrow night.

Right about now, anything would be a pleasant change for Barrie head coach Lindsay Sanderson.

"That's why we wanted to finish in the top two, to get that home-floor advantage, and now we've pissed it away," he said after Sunday's loss. "Both games were winnable. We had leads, which we gave up, so, obviously, we have to get better at that. You don't want to go down 3-0 to this Brampton club. They're a very well-groomed lacrosse team. They've got a lot of veteran guys who have been in the hot spot before. They're playing a very solid 60 minutes."

Falling behind 3-0 in the series is not something Barrie attacker Sean Greenhalgh wants to think about. Not many teams have been able to battle back from three-game deficits, and Greenhalgh doesn't want to have to prove the Lakeshores are capable of doing it.

"To be honest with you, it's a game like any other game. We can't win four games on Wednesday," Greenhalgh said. "Is it a big game? Yes. But every game right now is the biggest game of the year. We have to handle every game like it's the most important, and, if we do that, I think we'll be OK."

It's not as though the Lakeshores have been outplayed in the series. A couple of bad bounces here, a costly turnover there and it has ended up in the back of their net on more than one occasion. There is still plenty of optimism surrounding the club.

"We're just not shooting in the right places right now," Greenhalgh said. "The defence is working hard, it's just offensively we have to do a better job. We have to get a couple more goals and hitting our spots when we're taking shots. We have to find a way to start putting the ball in the back of the net."

If there is one thing the Lakeshores can build upon it's that they won both games at the Powerade Centre during the regular season.

Greenhalgh said they have plenty of confidence about going into that building and stealing a pair of games just as the Excelsiors did to them in the first two.

"It's great to go play in Brampton and know we won both of our games down there," he said. "Playoffs are different, though. We have to go in and play as hard as we can to get that win."

One thing Barrie needs to start doing if it wants to change its fortunes is take better advantage of its opportunities on the power play.

Through the first two games, the Lakeshores have scored just one goal in 14 opportunities with the man-advantage, and given up four short-handed goals.

"I'm very disappointed with the power play," Sanderson said. "We had two short-handed goals scored on us (Sunday). One with the two-man advantage and the one in the third that tied things up and got Brampton running.

"All you can do is keep working things out, shooting the ball, and, hopefully, it starts going in."

The ball was going in for Mark Steenhuis on Sunday. He scored three times, while Nathan Sanderson and Luke Wiles had the others.

Brodie Merrill had a pair, including the game winner, while Josh Sanderson, Pat McCready, Jeff Shatler, Mike Hominuck and Dan Teat added singles for Brampton.

"The key thing is that we've lost both games, but we've been right in them until the last second," Sanderson said. "We will build on that. Every game in this series is going to go down to the last second, and, hopefully, we'll be on top at the end of the next one." Game time is 8 p.m.

Lakeshores Drop Game One 7 to 6
August 4, 2007

The Barrie Lakeshores knew that the two week lay off was a good thing as it related to allowing their players to rest and heal from injuries. They also knew that it would take some time to get back to game form against the Brampton Excelsiors who were fresh off their first round win against the Kitchener Kodiaks in Major Series Lacrosse opening round play off action.

The Lakeshores throughout the contest had difficulty finding the net as many of their shots missed or found the post against Brampton's oversized goalie Anthony Cosmo.

The first period ended with the visiting Excelsiors up 2 to 1 as the over 800 fans in attendance settled in for this closely contested match. Characteristic throughout the period and for that matter the game was the Exclesiors desire to constantly draw the Lakeshores into after whistle scrums resulting in a number of penalties that benefited the boy's from Brampton more than the Barrie squad.

The second period ended 4 to 2 for Brampton leading to a scoring burst by the Lakeshores in the opening two minutes of the third period when the short handed Lakeshores scored 4 goals in just over two minutes to take a 6 to 4 lead.

With less than a minute to go Excesior forward Blaine Manning caught a Lakeshore defender napping beating him to the net resulting in the winning goal for Brampton.

A complete game summary is available at www.majorserieslacrosse.net

Game two returns to the air conditioned Barrie Molson Center tomorrow night (Sunday August 5th). Game time is 7 PM.

Lakeshores lack power; Barrie falls 7-6 in playoff opener
The Barrie Examiner
Dan Charuk
Saturday, August 04, 2007 @ 07:00

The Barrie Lakeshores power play failed to score and allowed a pair of short-handed goals which ended up being the difference in a 7-6 loss to the Brampton Excelsiors last night at the Barrie Molson Centre.

Brampton leads the best-of-seven Major Series lacrosse semifinal 1-0.

Barrie went 0-for-7 with the man advantage and head coach Lindsay Sanderson said that ultimately cost them the game.

"Our power play was just not good tonight," he said. "With the two weeks off we were a little rusty, and at the end of the night it was the main reason why we lost."

Chad Culp scored twice and had two assists for the Lakeshores, who led 6-4 in the third period. Luke Wiles had a goal and two assists, Sean Greenhalgh and Bryan Kazarian had a goal and an assist each, and Matt Holman added the other.

Dan Teat and Jeff Shagler scored twice each for Brampton. Mike Kirk, Aaron Wilson and Blane Manning, with 32 seconds left, netted the winner.

Barrie outshot the Excelsiors 55-40.

"No one had a real good game for us," Sanderson said. "It was a pretty ordinary night."

Game 2 of the series is Sunday night at the Barrie Molson Centre.

Sanderson expects a better effort than his team showed last night.

"We'll play through it," he said. "We got all the kinks out, so we'll do better on Sunday."

Game time is 7 p.m.

Lakeshores ready for tough battle; Barrie hosts Brampton for Game 1 tonight
The Barrie Examiner
Dan Charuk
Friday, August 03, 2007 @ 07:00

The Barrie Lakeshores are rested and itching to get going.

After getting a first-round bye in the Major Series lacrosse playoffs, the Lakeshores will hit the floor for the first time in 13 days when they square off against the Brampton Excelsiors in Game 1 of the best-of-seven series tonight at the Barrie Molson Centre.

It's the first time in the Lakeshores' three-year history they have earned a bye through the first round, and head coach Lindsay Sanderson said it was much needed. There were a few bumps and bruises that needed some time to heal and now they are eager to get back on the floor.

"We wanted to get one of the first two spots so we could get a bit of a break," Sanderson said. "No one goes through a season without picking up a few injuries. We definitely needed the rest. We had a practice on Tuesday night, though, and the guys looked ready to go." Brampton is coming off a three-game sweep of the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks in the first round and finished just a point behind the Lakeshores in the regular season standings.

Barrie won all three of the head-to-head matchups during the regular season, including two in Brampton, but that gets thrown out the window now.

"We've had some success against them to this point, and I hope we can continue that," Sanderson said. "Playoffs are a different story, though, and they're going to want to erase what we did to them. I think it's going to be a competitive and entertaining series."

Since joining the MSL, the Lakeshores have yet to advance past the second round. They lost in six games to Brampton in 2005 and Peterborough last season.

With those past failures in mind, general manager Mike Kloepfer made some significant additions to this year's club, which Sanderson believes can finally get them over the hump.

"I think that we have more weapons than we did in the past," Sanderson said. "That's been a big reason for our success so far. If a team shuts down one of our guys, someone else has been there to put the ball in the net."

Mark Steenhuis has been the catalyst for the Barrie offence this season, along with Chad Culp and Luke Wiles. Sean Greenhalgh, Nathan Sanderson and Matt Holman have also been consistent contributors night in and night out.

Barrie will need continued production if they are to keep up with the run-and-gun Excelsiors. With veteran Josh Sanderson leading the way, Brampton has been one of the most explosive teams offensively this season.

It will be up to goaltender Rob Blasdell and the Lakeshores' defence to keep Brampton in check and allow the offence to take care of itself.

"We have to have all-star goaltending," Sanderson said. "Rob's been doing that all season. He's had a real strong summer. We've also brought in Chris Driscoll to go along with Glenn Clark, Bryan Kazarian and Brad MacArthur for some extra experience."

Nothing would go farther for the Lakeshores' confidence than getting off to a quick start to the series. With two games at home, Sanderson feels it's a great opportunity to get in the driver's seat early.

"We definitely want to hold on to home floor," he said. "We might be a little rusty at first because of the time off, but we'll get that out of our system within the first period and we'll be fine. I like our team. It should be a good series."

Game time is 8 p.m.

Lakeshores Finish In Second Place As MSL Regular Season Ends
Sunday, July 22, 2007

The Barrie Lakeshores MSL Lacrosse Club entered this final weekend of MSL regular season with first, second and third place in the MSL still to be determined.

The Lakeshores made the trek to Akwesasne (close to Cornwall) last night to take on the St. Regis Indians with the opportunity to gain two points that would put them in first. Unfortunately their effort fell short resulting in a closely contested 9 to 8 loss. This loss put the Barrie squad in a position to wait for the results of tonight's Peterborough/Brampton game that would determine the final standings. With Peterborough coming away with a 10 to 8 win earlier this evening in Brampton the Lakers finish in first place with 27 points, the Lakeshores in second with 24 points and the Brampton Excelsiors in third with 23 points.

This gives the third year Lakeshores their best record and finish to date at 12 wins and 6 losses along with second place in the hotly contested MSL. Finishing second also gives the Lakeshores a bye from first round competition and allows them to prepare for the MSL Semi-Final.

Peterborough defeats Lakeshores 13-8
Barrie Advance
Date: Jul 20, 2007

The Barrie Lakeshores had a pretty good first period in their important road matchup with the Peterborough Lakers Thursday night.

After falling behind 3-0, Barrie stormed back with six straight goals, ending the frame up 6-5.

Then, the team managed only two more goals over the remaining two periods in losing 13-8 in their second-last game of the regular season.

The loss was crucial for Barrie as it knocked the Lakeshores into second place in the Major Lacrosse Series standings, a point behind the Lakers, and just one up on third-place Brampton. Both Peterborough and the Excelsiors have a game in hand on Barrie.

In order to secure first place, the Lakeshores have to win Saturday night against the St. Regis Indians, and hope Peterborough loses both its remaining games, and Brampton loses at least one of two.

In the game Thursday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, Luke Wiles had two goals and two assists to lead the Barrie attack. Mark Steenhuis had three goals, while Chad Culp had a goal and two assists.

Rob Taylor also scored, and added one helper, while Darren Halls scored the other Barrie goal.

Lakeshores lose battle for first
The Barrie Examiner
Friday, July 20, 2007 @ 07:00

The Barrie Lakeshores run at first place in the Major Series lacrosse standings came to an end last night after they dropped a 13-8 decision to the host Peterborough Lakers.

While their hopes of finishing first are gone, the Lakeshores can wrap up an all-important bye in the first round with a victory over the St. Regis Indians in their regular season finale on Saturday night.

Barrie currently holds a three--point lead on the Brampton Excelsiors. Brampton has two games remaining.

The top teams in the MSL receive first-round byes.

Last night in Peterborough, the Lakeshores scored six-straight times to grab a 7-5 lead in the second period, but the Lakers, backed by Dan Carey's five goals and another three by Brad Self, roared back with straight markers of their own to put it away.

Mark Steenhuis scored three times and Luke Wiles added two goals and two assists to lead the way offensively for Barrie.

Chad Culp, Rob Taylor and Darren Halls also scored for the Lakeshores.

Barrie outshot Peterborough, 44-41.

The Lakeshores got devastating news this week, learning Chad Thompson is out for the rest of the year with an ACL injury to his knee.

Lakeshores hold home court; Win over Brampton big step in locking up first-round playoff bye
IAN SHANTZ
The Barrie Examiner
Monday, July 16, 2007 @ 07:00

With a week remaining in the Major Series lacrosse regular season, and four teams in a tight battle for playoff positioning, the Barrie Lakeshores know every win or loss from here on out has major implications.

They took a step in the right direction last night with a gutsy 10-6 win over the Brampton Excelsiors at the Barrie Molson Centre.

In their final home game of the regular season, the Lakeshores completed the season sweep against Brampton and vaulted past Peterborough into first place.

However, Peterborough has three games remaining compared to Barrie's two, and sit just one point back of the Lakeshores.

The teams meet in Peterborough Thursday night.

"We like to take it one game at a time, but, obviously, with only two games left in the season, we're looking for that first spot," Lakeshores' head coach Lindsay Sanderson said following last night's win. "We'll have to get ready for Peterborough."

With four teams still mathematically capable of claiming first place, and none of those teams in a position to clinch the No. 1 or No. 2 positions just yet, there's still plenty at stake before playoffs get underway.

The top two teams earn a bye past the opening playoff round, and the Lakeshores are well aware of that.

"A rest would be good," said Chad Culp, who wasn't taking a rest in last night's game, scoring four times and setting up on two others to lead his team in scoring. "You do take a beating out there and we have quite a few guys with injuries, so, if we can get them rested up, it will help us in the long run.

"So, that's our goal, to get first place. We're confident about it." Along with Culp, the Lakeshores relied on Sean Greenhalgh's three goals and markers from Rob Taylor, Nathan Sanderson and Mark Steehhuis.

Rob Blasdell made 42 saves in net, and was particularly sharp in the opening two periods, during which Barrie was outshot, 35-20.

Defender Anthony Lackey had a team-best seven steals in the game.

Following Thursday's game in Peterborough and a road game Saturday against St. Regis, Barrie's playoff picture should look a little clearer, but, until then, Sanderson expects his team to put it all on the line.

"We answered the bell every time (tonight). I hope we can keep it going," he said. "We knew that opportunity was there and we took advantage of it.

"We took the first of the set, so now we have to move on."

It was the Lakeshores last home game of the regular season, and propelled the team into first place in the Major Series Lacrosse overall standings.

The win gave Barrie a record of 12-4 for 24 points, one up on Peterborough, and three ahead of third-place Brampton in the standings.

Barrie has only two games left in the regular season, while both Peterborough and Brampton have three, meaning the regular season title, and home-arena advantage throughout the playoffs, will come down the final spate of games this coming weekend.

Culp scored two of his four goals in the first frame, a period that saw Barrie emerge with a tight 3-2 lead. Sean Greenhalgh opened the scoring for Barrie, whole Josh Sanderson and Sean Holmes replied for the visitors.

The score was also 3-2 for the Lakeshores in the second period, with Culp getting his third goal of the game, and Greenhalgh his second. Nathan Sanderson also tallied in the period, while Josh Sanderson scored his second of the match for Brampton and John Harasym also scored.

An offensive outburst in the third period propelled the Barrie Lakeshores to an 11-7 win over the St. Regis Indians in a Major Series Lacrosse game played Sunday afternoon at the Barrie Molson Centre.

At one point in the final frame, Barrie was trailing 6-5 and then scored five unanswered goals to go ahead 10-6. St. Regis got one goal back with 3:20 left in the period, but less than a minute later Nathan Sanderson scored his second of the game for the Lakeshores to make it a 11-7 final.

The teams were tied 2-2 after one period as Mark Steenhuis and Matt Holman scored for Barrie. Brett Bucktooth and Kyle Schmelze replied for the visitors.

Bucktooth and John Tavares then scored for St. Regis to make it 4-2 halfway through the second period, before Steenhuis and Jeff Gilbert knotted the game at 4-4, Gilbert’s goal coming with only 44 seconds left on the clock.

Besides two goals each from Sanderson and Chad Culp in the third, Barrie also got tallies from Brad McArthur, Ryan Gallagher and Anthony Lackey.

Brandon Francis, Kevin Dostie and Nick Trudeau scored for the Indians.

Wednesday, the Lakeshores play a road game against the Brooklin Redmen, followed by the team’s final home game of the campaign, Sunday, July 15, at 7 p.m., against the Excelsiors.

A Special Night For Orillia/Rama Players
June 29, 2007

This Saturday will be a special night for a few Orillia and Rama hometown lacrosse players as it will mark a rare appearance for these players on their hometown floor. These players who grew up in Orillia and Rama have spent many years now plying their lacrosse skills in cities all over North America. Winter sees them as part of their National Lacrosse League teams while the summer has them travelling the Major Series Lacrosse League circuit all over Ontario.

This Saturday will be the first time that Rob Blasdell, Luke Wiles, Chad Thompson and Doug Noganosh have played in their hometown since they left Jr. Lacrosse.

With Blasdell the senior member and backbone of the Arizona Stings team that went to the NLL Championship this past May it is a game he has eagerly waited for.

"I have been excited for weeks since I initially found out that we would be playing at the Mask" said Blasdell. "It will be a great night for Luke, Chad Doug and I to play in front of our hometown."

Both Luke Wiles and Chad Thompson were standouts for the Rama Kings Jr. A Lacrosse Club for many years and with their San Jose Stealth and Toronto Rock careers well on the way they are excited to be able to play in this Saturday's game.

For Doug Noganosh fresh off his silver medal finish representing the Iroquois Nationals at the World Lacrosse Championships in Halifax in May, this former NLL veteran player won't have much of a drive to the rink as he lives and works in Rama as a police officer for the Mjikaning Police Services.

This game will also feature the Mann Cup Champion Peterborough Lakers who boast a star studded roster with players like John Grant Jr., Tracy Kelusky, Scott Evans and Pat O'Toole.

Professor Takes Chiefs To School  Clark Helps Lakeshores Rally for Victory
The Barrie Examiner
Dan Charuk
Sports - Friday, June 22, 2007

It might be the first days of summer, but the Barrie Lakeshores' professor sure took the Six Nations Chiefs to school.

Barrie captain Glenn Clark, better know as 'the Professor', had a goal, three assists and a pair of takeaways that led to two more quick strikes in his team's 11-10 victory last night over the Chiefs at the Barrie Molson Centre.

"We battled back and showed some tenacity, so, hopefully, we can build on that," Clark said of the come-from-behind win. "You always have mixed emotions about a game like that. We had some mistakes at bad times. There were some mental lapses out there which hurt us."

Clark is just starting to get back into game shape after spending the winter coaching the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League. He admits to not being where he wanted to be to start the season, but is feeling better with each game he plays.

"The first one or two games it took a while to get the timing," Clark said. "But you get into a groove pretty quickly. I've been doing this for a long time, so you bounce back pretty quick."

Barrie head coach Lindsay Sanderson has noticed the improvement in Clark's game since the start of the season, with goals in his last two games, and expects his level of play to increase as he gets more and more playing time.

"The last couple of games, Clark has been one of our best players on the floor," Sanderson said. "He's been scoring a bit more, so it's nice to see he's getting into a groove now, and, hopefully, we can just keep riding it out."

Clark's value extends well beyond his play on the floor, though. He's a veteran presence in the team's dressing room and is really like another coach along with Sanderson behind the Lakeshores' bench.

"He's the full package," Sanderson said. "He's our captain for a reason. He does a lot of things on the floor that settle people down, and does all those little things that you get from playing for such a long time."

Barrie held one-goal leads on five different occasions through the first period-and-a-half, but a three-goal run by the Chiefs midway through the second period gave them a 7-5 lead, and they held a 9-7 advantage after 40 minutes.

It would be the Lakeshores who would get the last laugh, however, as they scored three straight in the third - including the game winner by Luke Wiles - for the come-from-behind victory.

"We got the two points, which we were after, but it was pretty sloppy," Sanderson said. "There were a lot of dropped balls and a lot of missed passes.

"You would have thought it was at the start of the season, but we caught a couple of balls late that made the difference and we took care of business."

Wiles, Chad Thompson, Chad Culp and Sean Greenhalgh all scored twice for the Lakeshores, while Mark Steenhuis and Matt Holman had the others.

Tom Montour, Cody Jacobs and Dean Hill had two each for Six Nations, with singles by Scott Stewart, Delby Powless, Gewas Schindler and Kim Squire.

The two teams will be right back at it Saturday night, as the Chiefs return to the BMC for a 7 p.m. start.

Former Tornado Captain Moves Up To Lakeshores
Dan Charuk- Barrie Examiner
Sports - Friday, June 08, 2007

Brad Trottier is no stranger to slipping on a Barrie lacrosse jersey.

The 22-year-old native of Innisfil spent the past six seasons, including two as captain, of the Barrie Jr. 'B' Tornado and has now moved up to play with the Barrie Lakeshores of Major Series Lacrosse.

It's a jump that's been a long time coming, but one he's definitely excited about.

"It's a great experience," said the fourth-round pick of the San Jose Stealth in the 2006 National Lacrosse League draft. "I'm still trying to get used to it. It's a step faster, so you have to be thinking quicker and adjust to how other guys are playing. It's been different going from the big dog to the little dog, but it's been alright."

As much as Trottier is enjoying the experience of being a Lakeshore, that's not to say his time with the Tornado wasn't memorable. He won a Founders Cup as a sophomore in 2003, and saw his game grow and mature as he took on more of a leadership role with the squad.

All things he'll never forget about his time playing junior with the Tornado.

"It was good. I started playing right away as soon as Barrie had team," Trottier said. "It was a great experience. Those were some of the best guys I've ever had a chance to play with. I played a lot and won defensive player of the year for my team (in 2003). It was good."

When the Tornado were eliminated from the playoffs last summer, though, he wasn't sure if he'd ever get the chance to play for Barrie again.

He had spent the past two seasons practicing with the Lakeshores, but with the depth in the organization wasn't sure if he'd get the chance to suit up for them.

"I knew I had to earn my spot," Trottier said. "There was one there for the taking, so I just wanted to come out and work hard and show the coaches and management what I could do. Fortunately, I got the call so we'll see how it goes."

So far, it's been going pretty well. Although he sat out last night's 15-12 overtime win over the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks, Trottier has impressed Lakeshores head coach Lindsay Sanderson with his work ethic and energy on the floor.

The more he does those type of things, the more time on the floor Trottier is going to earn.

"He brings a lot of energy and is very strong, but still has tons to learn," Sanderson said. "This is a major step for him coming from Jr. 'B' to Major 'A'. There are a lot of little things he has to get better at, but he works so hard it won't take a lot of time. He's got a really nice upside to him."

For now, Trottier is just happy to get on the floor when he can and absorb all the advice defensive specialists such as Glenn Clark, Bryan Kazarian and Brad MacArthur have been giving him.

Clark has especially been a huge mentor for Trottier.

"Clarkie is a leader through and through," Trottier said. "He's always talking, and when he talks everyone listens. Everyone gets along here and has something to say. Even offensive guys will see you doing something and pull you aside and give you advice.

"Everyone has been great, so it's easy for me to go up to them and ask something."

One of those veterans, Mark Steenhuis, scored three times - including the game winner - last night to lift the Lakeshores past the Kodiaks.

Chad Culp also netted a hat trick, while Sean Greenhalgh, Kevin Fines, Luke Wiles and MacArthur had two goals each. Nate Sanderson also found the back of the net.

Paddy Campbell earned his first victory as a member of the Lakeshores going the distance between the pipes. He made 44 saves.

The next action for the Lakeshores is this Sunday when they're in Brampton to play the Excelsiors. Game time is 7 p.m.

Lakeshores Roll Over St. Regis 16 to 9 In Home Opener
June 4, 2007

STEENHUIS LEADS THE WAY WITH AN 11 PT. EFFORT

The Barrie Lakeshores were looking forward to seeing how their team would play once they got the key players from their roster on the floor at the same time and last night at the Barrie Molson Center they found out coming away with a 16 to 9 win against the St. Regis Indians.

The first period ended with the Lakeshores ahead 5 to 4 as the teams traded goals throughout the frame.

The Lakeshores started to pull away in the second period coming away with a 10 to 7 lead. Sean Greenhalgh scored a highlight reel marker at 5:21 of the period. The goal saw Greenhalgh intercept a pass faking a an overhand from 15' in front of the net before turning to throw a laser backhand past Indians goaltender Mike Thompson.

The Lakeshores transition game took hold in the third period setting a pace that the St. Regis side had difficulty matching allowing the Lakeshores to outscore St. Regis 6 to 2.

Barrie's next home game is this Thursday at the Barrie Molson Center at 8 PM as they host the Kitchener Waterloo Kodiaks.

Scores For Barrie: Mark Steenhuis 6G-5A, Chad Thompson 3G-2A, Luke Wiles 1G-4A, Glenn Clark 4A- Matt Holman 2G-1A, Doug Noganosh 3A, Nate Sanderson 3A, Jeff Gilbert 2G, Bryan Kazarian 2A, Chad Culp 1G, Sean Greenhalgh 1G.

Forward adds pop to Lakeshores; Sean Greenhalgh brings plenty of 'O' to Barrie
Dan Charuk
Barrie EXAMINER
Saturday, June 02, 2007 - 07:00

Sports - The Barrie Lakeshores will have a little bit more firepower in their lineup when they take to the floor in their home opener tomorrow night against the St. Regis Indians.

Offensive standout Sean Greenhalgh, a 24-year-old native of St. Catharines, will make his debut with the club, and fans can expect him to bring some added pop to a Barrie attack in need of some goals.

"I'm extremely excited to be coming to Barrie," Greenhalgh said from his home in St. Catharines. "I was with the team for the first time (on Tuesday) and we have a great group of guys. I can't wait to get out there. It's been a while since I played summer lacrosse up here (in Ontario). It's exciting."

Greenhalgh was acquired by the Lakeshores in February 2006 in a five-player deal with the now defunct St. Catharines Athletics. Greenhalgh, Matt Roik and Matt Holman came to Barrie in exchange for Mat Marchildon and Phil Montgomery. Greenhalgh could have played with the Lakeshores last summer, but since he was living in Philadelphia, decided it would be too difficult to make the trip north. This summer, he's back home in St. Catharines, and has decided to make the trek.

"It just never worked out before," he said. "We tried last summer, but things didn't pan out. I'm finally going to be there this summer. It's exciting to play on the same team as guys like Mark Steenhuis, Luke Wiles and Glenn Clark. I'm very fortunate to get this opportunity."

Barrie general manager Mike Kloepfer couldn't be happier to have him join the club. He hopes Greenhalgh, a left-handed shot, will help get the Lakeshores over the hump and into the Major Series Lacrosse championship series and to the Mann Cup.

"With Sean, when you look at his pedigree he's one of the top left-handed forwards out there," Kloepfer said. "We really felt in the last two years if we had any weakness it was on the left side of our offence. You need three strong left-handed forwards that can contribute. To have Sean here and signed is a great thing.

"It really shores up that void."

Greenhalgh played his junior lacrosse in his hometown, and also spend four years with the Cornell University lacrosse team, where he was named the 2005 Ivy League Player of the year. He was drafted third overall by the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League that same year, and has spent the past two years with the Wings.

"The combination of hard work and the experience of playing box lacrosse and at Cornell have helped me out a lot," said Greenhalgh, who was the 2005 NLL rookie of the year. "I still have a lot to learn, but I was pretty well prepared with those two backgrounds."

With 57 goals and 141 points in 32 career NLL games, Greenhalgh has established himself as a consistent offensive presence on the floor, and Kloepfer thinks he's capable of putting up big numbers this season with Barrie. That should be welcome news to Lakeshores fans. "That's my game - playing on the offensive side," Greenhalgh said. "We've got a whole bunch of guys to work with like Steenhuis, Chad Culp, Wiles and guys whose names I don't even know yet. I just want to chip in with a couple of points and help to make us that much better of a team."

Despite all of his accolades, Greenhalgh has yet to play in a playoff game the last two years since joining the Wings. He's looking to rectify that situation this summer. Getting to the post season, and doing some damage when he gets there, are Greenhalgh's main focus.

"It's huge. Playing anywhere and any sport, you know playoffs are a whole different ball game," he said. "I want to get in there so bad. It's a long road getting there, but we have to take care of business, and, hopefully, we'll be playing for a long time. I can't wait for that."

It won't be up to Greenhalgh alone to get Barrie over the hump in the playoffs. The Lakeshores dealt their 2008 first-round draft pick to the Brampton Excelsiors in exchange for goaltender Paddy Campbell.

With Roik not able to give a firm commitment to playing lacrosse in Ontario this summer, Kloepfer felt he had to go out and bring in another top goaltender to team with starter Rob Blasdell. He believes they have that in Campbell.

"He's an exceptional team guy," Kloepfer said. "Even when he's not in net he has found a way to contribute to any team he's played on. He's a ferocious competitor and one of the toughest guys in the game. He's a beauty and I'm glad we have him."

Both Campbell and Greenhalgh are expected to be in the lineup for Barrie against St. Regis on Sunday. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Barrie Molson Centre.

Rock Select MacLeod, Gilbert in Second Round  Toronto Builds for Future with Pair of Ontario Lacrosse Association Picks

NEW YORK - The Toronto Rock selected Orangeville's Mike MacLeod with their first pick (second round, 15th overall) in the 2006 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft.

MacLeod, who played with Rock assistant Matt Sawyer’s Orangeville Junior A Northmen this past summer, had four goals and 30 assists for his squad this past season.

The Rock also selected Jeff Gilbert, a member of the Barrie Lakeshores Major Lacrosse team who has great potential, according to Rock Director of Lacrosse Operations Mike Kloepfer. In 17 games last year, Gilbert tallied five goals and 15 assists.

Both players are expected to make an immediate impact with the Rock.

“We’re happy with both second-round picks,” Kloepfer said. “We’re proud of our homegrown talent from Ontario and happy to acquire both Mike and Jeff for our organization.”

Toronto acquired it's pick for Gilbert (2nd round, 19th overall) on draft day from the Minnesota Swarm and Minnesota’s fourth round pick in the 2007 Entry Draft in exchange for 2005 draftee Nick Inch and the Rocks' second round pick in the 2007 Entry Draft.

In the third round, the Rock selected Matt Carroll of Whitby, Ont. While the draft is still in progress, updates can be found throughout the evening at www.nll.com: <http://www.nll.com/> . A full draft recap will be posted later tonight at www.torontorock.com: <http://www.torontorock.com/> .

May 25, 2006

TORONTO – The Toronto Rock completed its hiring of lacrosse operations staff on May 23 with the announcement of Mike Kloepfer as the new Director of Lacrosse Operations and Matt Sawyer and Greg Van Sickle as assistant coaches. The trio joins head coach Glenn Clark for the 2007 season.

Kloepfer, 44, is currently the President and General Manager of the Barrie Lakeshores of Major Series Lacrosse. He is also the president of the Barrie Tornado Jr. B lacrosse club and an executive with the Barrie South Simcoe Minor Lacrosse Association.

"It is my privilege to join the Toronto Rock,” said Kloepfer. “I look forward to being part of this great organization as we build towards another NLL Champion’s Cup."

Clark is confident in Kloepfer's ability to build the Rock back into a champion.

"He's a very smart man, and he sees things in a business perspective for both the short and long term," Clark said. "He's a good complement to our organization."

Kloepfer, who is also a partner with the Couchiching Terriers OHA Jr. A hockey club, was born in Jackson’s Point, Ont. Over the past decade, he has been a driving force behind the growth of lacrosse in the Simcoe Region and specifically the City of Barrie. He lives in Gilford, Ont., with his wife Cathy, who is the president of Barrie South Simcoe Minor Lacrosse Association, and has two sons Cory and Brett.
